Although you had to keep deleting certain files to ensure the next attempt was not effected by them, it became clear that Thunderbird program itself was installed ok and should have been working ok.
The new default profile names should also have a set of default files and folders, so clearly something is going wrong.
Only after that is done will I update my in-use copy of the program.
